For many years (over 20) we have been experimenting with small-scale animal husbandry and vegetable gardening. We raise pigs and meat poultry through the summer and tend a large vegetable garden as well as an ever-enlarging food forest.
We enjoy the connection with animals, the routine of daily chores, the practice of observing their varied behaviors and discovering ways to enhance their lives, their shelters, and the variety of foods we can offer them. As parents, we feel grateful to have had the opportunity to give our children a sense of this connection.
A large vegetable garden, with 15 raised beds, as well as a large area of in-ground growing space, has supplemented our family’s nutrition for many years.
We have learned many lessons of self-sufficiency as we discover ways to use the valuable by-products of animal husbandry, like producing cooking lard, enhancing compost and making bonemeal. We appreciate the generations before us who survived without the vast machinery we now take for granted.
Sharing these skills feels like a mission at a time when food is sourced at increasing distances. Our vision includes growing out to welcome other families who want to raise animals and foods collectively. Milk goats, for example, would be an exciting addition to the collective!
