The Property

Vermilion North Pines property is situated along the shoreline of Big Vermilion Lake, accessed from Hwy 664, and along the Vermilion River to Silver Falls and below. The property is historically rich, extensive and diverse comprising miles of shoreline, lake and river environments, islands, high elevations and acres of typical boreal wilderness, including many stands of predominant cedar.

This land has been a resource and recreation hub for our family for many years as we have been learning its attributes and developing trails, campsites and shelters to offer for others to enjoy.

Our Vision

To practice simple, conscious living, connection with nature, and exploration of community. To share a connection with our exquisite boreal forest surroundings and the simple comforts and opportunities that it provides.

Growing Home

‘Growing Home’ is an expression we use to refer to a practice of simple living which we feel is very healthy.

Growing Home simply means sourcing, whenever possible, from close at hand, to solve for our collective and individual needs and joys.

The mantra is:

We are enough; we have enough.

This approach applies to resources, human and all other, and has us constantly asking ourselves:

  • How can we do this (insert project) with what we have?
  • How can we make this with what we have?
  • How can we live with what we have?

What Growing Home Includes

  • Growing our own food: permaculture gardening and small-scale animal husbandry
  • Enjoying the outdoors through camping, hiking, snowshoeing
  • Recycling, repairing, creative restoration
  • Encouraging innovation, artistic expression and creativity
  • Sharing knowledge and learning from each other
  • Simplifying and reducing our needs
